Looping audio can be very useful when you need to duplicate a chunk of audio over and over. In Audacity, it is easy to choose the audio you wish to loop, and the frequency at which it does so.
To loop, highlight the audio. Click on 'Effect,' then 'Repeat.' You can then choose the frequency at which it is repeated. Adjust until you have the desired results.

Splitting in Audacity
Splitting is also a very important aspect of Audacity and audio editing. Splitting effectively saves chunks of an audio track as different files.
To split an Mp3 file in Audacity, select the audio you wish to split by highlighting it. Then click 'Edit - Split.' You may now save the split portions as separate Mp3 tracks.

Duplicating in Audacity
Copying audio bits is a fast way to repeat certain bits of audio where you want them. This is especially useful in song editing, or to repeat sound effects without re-opening the file.
To duplicate, highlight your selection and click 'Edit - Duplicate.' You may instead press CTRL + Z after highlighting.

Silence Tool
The Silence Tool in Audacity helps mute chunks of audio while still retaining the correct timing. You may also choose to cut certain pieces of audio; both are acceptable ways of removing unwanted noise.
To use the Silence Tool, highlight the audio you wish to mute, then push CTRL + L. You may also click 'Generate Silence' instead of CTRL + L, and then enter the length you wish to mute.

Cut/Copy and Paste in Audacity
Audacity is a very simple but powerful tool for audio editing. With a very basic interface, navigation is easy within the program.
Two of the most important tools you will use in Audacity are located in the toolbar at the top left:
- Selection Tool
- Time Shift Tool
You may only use one of these tools at a time.
Working with Audacity is very easy - the cut/copy and paste methods are very similar to those found in Microsoft Word. Cut/Copy and Paste is a simple, five-step process:
Step One - Record an Audio Track
Open Audacity and push the red button to record
Step Two - Select Time to Cut
Your final product will sound more coherent and appealing if you edit out unnecessary parts. Click on the 'Selection' tool, then left click and hold on the track. Drag the pointer to mark the time to cut. Use 'Shift' to expand or lessen your selection.
Step Three - Preview the Selected Audio
Pushing the space bar will play the selected audio. Make sure you know what you've cut so that you may undo it if necessary. Click the 'Time Shift' tool to shift any audio you want to change.
Step Four - Copying/Cutting
Click 'Edit' in the toolbar, then click 'Copy' or 'Cut.' Click 'Play' to hear your changes.
Step Five - Pasting
Repeat steps 1 to 4, and select where you want to paste the material. Click 'Edit' in the toolbar, then 'Paste.' Make sure you listen to the results to see if you have timed it correctly.

Box.net - A useful file-storing resource
Box.net is similar to an ftp site, but free.
Box.net allows you to store files online, accessible anywhere. It is very useful as a digital backup for audio files and other large files that may be too large for a CD or USB key.
Using Box.net is easy:
- Go to Box.net and sign up for a free account (Lite)
- Create a new folder
- Select folder and upload your files
- You may link to the files online or send them to others
Always remember to save your work frequently when working with an editing program like Audacity. We recommend saving changes after every major adjustment.
