The Silence Tool in Audacity helps mute chunks of audio while still retaining the correct timing. You may also choose to cut certain pieces of audio; both are acceptable ways of removing unwanted noise.
To use the Silence Tool, highlight the audio you wish to mute, then push CTRL + L. You may also click 'Generate Silence' instead of CTRL + L, and then enter the length you wish to mute.
